Science and Technology for Sustainable Development

Doctoral Programme focused on transdisciplinary research, innovation and sustainability, aligned with the UN 2030 Agenda and its SDGs.

Progetto formativo

Sbocchi occupazionali e professionali previsti

Training Project

The PhD Programme aims to train professionals with interdisciplinary expertise in the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development. In particular, the programme is designed to develop solid transdisciplinary skills related to the seventeen Sustainable Development Goals — SDGs — of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

With reference to the ERC descriptors, the PhD Programme integrates research fields belonging to the areas PE4, PE5, PE8, PE10, SH1 and SH3, with particular attention to chemical sciences, advanced materials, product and process engineering, Earth system science, economics, management, sustainability, territorial planning, and studies on environment, space and population.

The programme is structured around three main themes: Circular Economy, focusing on production, consumption, waste management and the market for secondary raw materials; Climate, Energy and Urban Systems, addressing the impacts of climate change, renewable energy, energy efficiency, smart cities and urban planning; and Health and Inclusion, focusing on the impacts of climate change and air pollution on human health, wellbeing, social inclusion and migration.

Course Objectives

The main objective of the PhD Programme is to train professional profiles capable of integrating sustainability-related expertise with the technical skills required for specific professional and research functions. The programme promotes the acquisition of transdisciplinary skills aimed at the common good and focused on the environmental, economic and social aspects of sustainable development, in line with the SDGs of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Within the area of Climate, Energy and Urban Systems, the programme provides expertise on climate change, increasing pollution levels and their impacts on ecosystems and territories. It also explores energy transition, the decarbonisation of the economy, smart cities and urban planning for climate and environmental mitigation and adaptation.

Within the area of Circular Economy, the programme aims to accelerate the transition towards circular models through innovation in the production systems of goods and services adopted by companies, businesses and local authorities, while also promoting awareness of responsible consumption.

Within the area of Health and Social Inclusion, the programme examines the impact of climate, environmental, urban and economic changes on human health, migration and inclusion processes within communities.

Expected Career and Professional Opportunities

Career opportunities include positions for PhD graduates in private companies, both profit and non-profit, including multinational companies and small and medium-sized enterprises, as well as in public administrations at central, regional and local levels and in non-territorial public bodies.

PhD graduates will be able to contribute to shaping and supporting corporate policies, decision-making processes and operational strategies through capacity-building actions, particularly in relation to sustainable development, environmental protection and climate change mitigation.

Depending on the skills acquired, the PhD Programme also provides a solid foundation for a subsequent research career in universities and public or private research centres. The qualification may represent an important asset for applications to research grants, postdoctoral positions and other academic and scientific career paths.

PhD candidates may therefore pursue careers as researchers and lecturers at Italian and international universities, as well as researchers in national and international research bodies and institutions.

The main objective of the PhD Programme in Sciences and Technologies for Sustainable Development is to train professional profiles capable of integrating sustainability expertise with the technical skills required by specific roles. The programme promotes a transdisciplinary approach aimed at acquiring new competencies to address the environmental, economic and social dimensions of sustainable development, in line with the SDGs of the United Nations 2030 Agenda.

Doctoral candidates operate in a stimulating academic context where advanced scientific training meets real-world challenges. Through specialised courses, seminars and research activities, students develop strong analytical abilities, critical thinking and the skills needed to produce high-quality scientific outputs and generate impact across institutions, companies and communities.
